A Brief History of Trade: From Moving Goods to Moving Work
Clay tablets, shared capital, shipping containers, and marketplaces all expanded what people could accomplish together. AI brings the next question closer to the everyday work of running a business.
The owner of a small commerce business can reach customers far beyond their hometown, compare suppliers across continents, and buy warehouse services without owning a warehouse. Yet the day can still disappear into chasing a quote, checking a margin, correcting a listing, and explaining a decision to the next person.
That tension has a long history. Trade has repeatedly expanded what people can do beyond the limits of their own time, relationships, and resources. Goods traveled farther. Agreements survived their authors. Capital supported ventures larger than one merchant. Information became easier to identify and exchange.
Seen this way, commerce history offers a useful question for the age of AI: what can a business do once more of the work of coordination can be carried by a system?
Before cities, materials were already crossing distances
Obsidian is volcanic glass. Its sharp edges made it useful for tools, and its chemical composition allows researchers to connect artifacts with geological sources.
At Olorgesailie in Kenya, researchers found obsidian tools and unshaped pieces in deposits around 320,000 years old. The material came from multiple distant sources, although the site had no obsidian source of its own. The Smithsonian research team interprets the pattern as evidence of exchange networks and wider social connections.
A stone cannot tell us every arrangement behind its journey. We should not turn it into proof of a modern contract or a neat origin story for markets. What it does reveal is that valuable material moved through a social world extending beyond the place where it was used.
That makes a useful beginning for this story. Long before a shopfront or a shipping manifest, access to something valuable could depend on connections beyond the immediate group.
A clay tablet could carry an agreement farther than memory
Roughly four thousand years ago, merchants worked between Mesopotamia and Anatolia. Donkey caravans carried tin and textiles; commercial relationships connected households and trading settlements over distance.
Their surviving paperwork is remarkably human. A tablet and envelope in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, dated to the twentieth–nineteenth century BCE, preserves a letter from Puzur-Ashur to his brothers. It concerns a business dispute and reports that his son and traveling companions have been detained. He wants news. The wider archive contains loans, transactions, disputes, and family correspondence.
Read from the perspective of a modern operator, the familiar element is the need to know what happened elsewhere. Someone had goods, somebody owed something, and another person needed information before deciding what to do.
Writing gave those relationships a durable record. An agreement could be consulted after the conversation ended. A message could reach somebody who had not been present. The record did not eliminate disagreement, but it gave people something outside their own recollection to work with.
The company expanded how much a venture could coordinate
Long-distance voyages required ships, crews, cargo, provisions, and patience. They also exposed capital to losses that an individual merchant might struggle to absorb.
The Dutch East India Company, or VOC, was founded in 1602. Euronext’s account of the Amsterdam exchange describes its issuance of publicly tradable shares that year. Investors could supply capital to a larger enterprise, while shares made ownership transferable.
The historical lesson needs its full context. As the Rijksmuseum explains, the VOC expanded through violence as well as trade. Its commercial power was bound up with colonial domination. Organizational capacity is powerful; its existence does not make its use benign.
For our argument, the significant change is the structure. A venture could coordinate resources and commitments beyond those of any one participant. Trade advanced through institutions as well as inventions. A contract, a record, or a form of ownership could change what a business was capable of attempting.
The container improved the handoff
For cargo traveling by sea, every transfer used to involve handling individual goods: sacks, barrels, crates, and machinery. The ship was only one part of the journey. Moving cargo onto it, off it, and into the next vehicle took work.
On April 26, 1956, the converted tanker Ideal X sailed from Newark to Houston carrying 58 aluminum containers. Trucking entrepreneur Malcom McLean worked with engineer Keith Tantlinger on a system that allowed the box to be lifted and secured while its contents stayed inside. The South Street Seaport Museum’s history also notes earlier precedents: the idea grew from a longer effort to connect transport modes.
The breakthrough is easier to appreciate when we look at the transfer. A standard container gave different parts of a journey a common object to handle. Making that work at scale required compatible equipment, terminals, and processes around it.
This offers a useful analogy for office work. A research report can be excellent and still arrive in a form that forces the sourcing specialist to reconstruct the brief. A supplier comparison can be thorough and still omit the assumptions needed by the person modeling the launch. Much of the delay happens between competent pieces of work.
A barcode gave systems a shared reference
On June 26, 1974, a pack of Wrigley’s gum was scanned at a Marsh supermarket in Troy, Ohio—the first commercial UPC scan, according to GS1 US.
A mundane product became a useful symbol of a larger change. An identifier could connect a physical item with information held by a system. People and machines had a common reference for which product they were discussing.
Consider how easily a small team can lose that clarity today. A supplier uses one product code, the creative team another name, and a marketplace a third identifier. If everybody means the same variant, the links need to be clear. If they mean different variants, collapsing them into one record creates mistakes.
The barcode’s lesson for an AI-enabled business is practical: usable information needs a dependable connection to the thing it describes.
Marketplaces made access easier to borrow
In 1995, Pierre Omidyar listed a broken laser pointer on the site that became eBay. Mark Fraser bought it for $14.83, as eBay later recounted. The small sale captures the internet’s ability to connect a specific item with somebody who wanted it, beyond the seller’s immediate circle.
Over time, online commerce made more parts of a business available as services. Sellers could use a platform’s audience, transaction systems, reputation mechanisms, and logistics arrangements. Building a route to customers no longer always required owning each part of that route.
For a founder, that is an extraordinary starting position. It also comes with work. The product still needs a reason to exist. Stock must arrive. Advertising must make economic sense. Customers need accurate information, and the business has to respond when an order or a plan goes wrong.
Access creates an opportunity; operating capability determines what the business can do with it. That distinction becomes visible the moment a small team tries to launch a second product or add another channel.
The next bottleneck sits between information and completed work
Imagine a founder preparing a new product. Research suggests a customer need. A supplier proposes a modification. The modification changes the packaging, which changes freight costs. The new cost alters the target price. Someone must bring the implications together before the founder commits to an order.
Each specialist may have done their part well. The founder still becomes the person who carries context between them: why that feature mattered, which quote is current, and what the original margin assumed. Adding another dashboard does little if the same person must continue rebuilding the connections.
AI introduces the possibility of preparing more of this work in context. It can help extract relevant details, compare options, organize evidence, and identify questions for review. With appropriate tools and defined responsibilities, agents can carry parts of a workflow forward. Commercial judgment and commitments still need clear ownership.
The historical analogy has a limit. AI is not a shipping container, and a business decision is not a box. Information can be incomplete, instructions can be ambiguous, and an apparently plausible answer can be wrong. The operating design must account for those differences: show the evidence, preserve the assumptions, and make it clear when a person needs to decide.
What this means for a smaller commerce business
The useful ambition is more capacity to build and run the business. Start with a recurring point of friction: comparing product ideas, preparing a sourcing decision, organizing a launch, or keeping an agency’s client work connected.
Then follow one piece of work to its next decision. What information does it need? Which result would let the next person proceed? What must be checked? Who owns the commercial call?
